Housing rights

The charity Shelter has fairly comprehensive information on housing rights on their website. Rights vary in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland so be sure you’re in the correct section. We are working on a summary of important rights relevant to Brighton/Sussex residents which we’ll publish here.

More than 2 million people in the UK find rent or mortgage payments a constant problem, and evictions have risen dramatically in the recession. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, remember that squatting is legal in England. There are estimated to be more empty houses than there are homeless people, and it is legal to just take direct action and move in. The Advisory Service for Squatters has good information if you’re considering (or already) squatting.
